As the name suggests, sustainability means using resources without overexploitation. The ultimate goal of sustainable development is sustainability which means achieving the minimum quality of life standards without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

To make sure, that sustainable development can take place, the UN (United Nations) brought out the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Rio de Janeiro. SDG’s have replaced the MDG’s (Millennium Development Goals). MDG’s were set up by the United Nations in 2000.

SDGs are composed of 17 main goals that don’t only include environmental goals but social and economical goals also.

There are many global challenges like Poverty, Inequality, Climate Change, Justice, Peace and Environmental Degradation etc. They all are to be addressed by the SDG. SDGs are also known as Global Goals, as they are made with the purpose of reducing the effect of global challenges.

SDGs 17 goals have the power to change the world as they are interrelated and action taken in one field is going to affect the other field. MDGs were narrower in focus but SDGs tackle a whole range of issues from climate change to gender inequality.

Our earth is getting I’ll due to human’s greed, problems like Greenhouse Gas Effect, Climate Change, Ozone Depletion etc. are the results of our action to get rid of the excess effect of all these problems it is important to take SDGs seriously.

Talking about Sustainable Development Goals, it includes each and every aspect of global challenges related to the environment, society and economy.

  • Goal 1 aims to No Poverty
  • Goal 2 aims to Zero Hunger
  • Goal 3 aims to Good Health and Well Being
  • Goal 4 aims to Quality Education
  • Goal 5 aims to Gender Equality
  • Goal 6 aims to Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Goal 7 aims to Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal 8 aims to Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 9 aims to Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • Goal 10 aims to Reduced Inequality
  • Goal 11aims to Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Goal 12 Focuses on Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Goal 13 Focuses on Climate Action
  • Goal 14 Focuses on Life Below Water
  • Goal 15 focuses on Life On Land
  • Goal 16 Focuses on Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions
  • Goal 17 aims to Partnership for the Goals

This agenda contains 17 goals and 169 targets, they are integrated, transformative, universal in nature. Each of these goals has some targets that the UN wants to reach by 2030. If successful, it will make the earth a better place to live on, where there will be no poverty, sufficient education, sustainable infrastructure etc. It may sound unrealistic to meet the goals, any progress will work and will make life better. These goals have the ability to create a better world by 2030.

It is not only the responsibility of our leaders, world organization to work on these goals, but we’ll also have to work on them in order to achieve these goals.
